Activities

Even if you have been to O’ahu before, come experience Hawaii in a whole new way. We will be offering three special excursion options to help develop a deeper connection. Pricing to be announced soon.

Zipline Sky Tour

Keana Farms is a 3-hour guided zipline tour that includes Oahu’s longest ziplines ranging from 500 feet to nearly half a mile long. Participants explore a working agricultural farm on 8 world-class dual lines, 2 rappels, 3 sky bridges, a fun ATV adventure to the ridgetop, and other unique surprises. Along the way, you’ll learn about Hawaii’s rich history and culture while taking in constant panoramic ocean and mountain views of Oahu’s famous North Shore.

Hawai'i Canoe Paddling

After arriving at a place where the mountains meet the sea on the beautiful Kaneohe Bay, we will have a unique Hawaiian experience: paddling on the ocean while learning about the cultural history and traditions as practiced in a modern Hawai‘i. At a nice leisurely pace, we will paddle around the island of Mokoli‘i, where we will soak up the beauty of the area. Some of may opt-in for snorkeling in this safe and peaceful environment.

Hiking Through Ahupuaʻa ʻO Kahana State Park

Kahana is a relatively unspoiled valley, and one of only a few publicly owned ahupuaʻa, or ancient Hawaiian land divisions, in the state. Nakoa Trail is a 2.5-mile loop that traverses the mid-elevation rainforest of Kahana Valley. Named after the native koa tree, the trail is relatively level, going through a forest of hala (pandanus), hapu‘u (tree fern), guava, kukui (candlenut), and an occasional koa tree. Our hike will be carpeted with lauhala (leaves of the hala tree) and kukui nuts. We will cross numerous, picturesque streambeds of small levels of water.

THE RETREAT CENTER

Location

The center is located in Kaʻaʻawa, Hawaiʻi, a small beach community nestled between spectacular mountains and beautiful white sand beaches on the windward coast of Oahu. Ka`a`awa is a picturesque 45-minute drive from Honolulu International Airport. The grounds consist of over three acres of tropical rainforest ringed by the Koʻolau Mountains, and just steps from a white sand beach with amazing sunrises.

Legends abound from and around our location. The traditional land divisions (ahupuaʻa) of Hakipuʻu, Kualoa, Kaʻaʻawa, Makaua, and Kahana form one of the richest and most sacred parts of Hawaiʻi. It was here that the first heiau (temple) was constructed, where the high shrine to the great god Lono existed, and it was the center of one of the two priesthoods in ancient Hawaiʻi.

Ocean

Ocean activities in and around Kaʻaʻawa are boundless. The ocean can be everything from a playground for water sports to a magical spot of healing and rejuvenation, a place to nurture the spirit within and without. Just a three-minute walk from the center gets you to Swanzy Beach Park. Swanzy is a county beach park with a white sand beach and a large grass area for Yoga and picnics. It also has restroom facilities.

A short stroll down the road gets you to Kaʻaʻawa Beach Park. It is a ribbon of white sand that is perfect for sunrise walks as it runs for about a mile. In some parts of this beach the sand is so fine it feels like powder between your toes. All of the beaches in Kaʻaʻawa have turquoise waters and palm trees.

If you want to take a four-minute car ride you can go to Kahana State Park. Kahana is an eight square mile park that ranges from sea level up to mountains over 2,500 feet high. The wide crescent-shaped beach, ringed by Ironwood trees that provide lots of shade, is a perfect beach to spend the day. Kahana is also a cultural park with pleasant hiking trails and an ancient 1400-year-old Hawaiian fishpond along the ocean.

Facility

A private and peaceful setting conducive to relaxation, reflection and creativity. The retreat center has a large central meeting space with a 13' high wall of glass with sliding doors that open to the lush jungle, bird songs, and the rhythm of the ocean!

Off the main space is a large lanai (deck) where we can gather at the end of the day.

It has a deck, lawn, and fire pit for our outdoor gatherings. Built with a concern for the environment, the centerʻs water comes from a rainwater catchment system and all driveways, parking and under buildings are permeable surfaces in an effort to keep rainwater runoff from going into the ocean.

The facility is wheelchair friendly with a ramp and large accessible doorways, hallways, and restrooms.

Mountains

The Koʻolau Mountains, which run for over 30 miles along the coast of this part of the island of Oʻahu, are the remains of a dormant volcano that collapsed and slid into the ocean hundreds of thousands of years ago. Waterfalls, rain, and wind have formed the deep crevasses in the slops and cliffs. Today the mountains provide outdoor enthusiasts an amazing environment for hiking, bird watching, mountain biking, horseback riding, ATV (all-terrain vehicle) and Jeep rides along with endless exploring of nature’s beauty.

The Koʻolau Mountains are prime native forest bird habitat on Oʻahu; in fact, the endangered Oʻahu ʻElepaio (Chasiempis ibidis) flycatcher recently had large portions of the southern and central Koʻolau Mountains established as critical habitat.

CUISINE

Our gourmet chef, Davina Day's passion for fresh ingredients and beautiful food is reflective of her time spent living and traveling throughout Europe where she was exposed to an exciting array of taste sensations, the freshest seasonal produce, and the experience of every meal being a celebration of flavor!

She prepares each meal using fresh local ingredients and herbs. Her healthy cuisine has a wonderful Polynesian flare and is lovingly prepared to accommodate any dietary requirement.

Breakfast is healthy and light, with luscious island-grown fruits, aromatic coffee and teas, and freshly baked bread. For lunch enjoy such wonderful dishes as Herb Encrusted Fresh Fish, home-made/locally grown Mango Pineapple Salsa, or Mediterranean Sandwiches overflowing with a bounty of exotic flavors.

Built in 2013 with wood floors, high ceilings, and tropical touches. Art from artists that have stayed at the retreat adorn the walls. There are six rooms for ancillary overnight stays, two with their own lanais (decks). Guests often comment that they are treated to a wonderful night's sleep. All beds are the finest quality hotel beds that are triple sheeted. Fluffy spa towels, tropical scented soaps, and shampoos are provided.

Private Hawaiian Home

This nearby, Hawaiian home gives you the best of both worlds, nestled up close to the Koolau mountains with a slight ocean view. Every room has AC within it (Split Unit/Ductless AC). This is situated on what they used to call "Hollywood Hill." Close enough to hear the roar of the ocean, but far enough away from the highway to feel the solitude of the country - located on a very quiet street and in a cul-de-sac just a short walk to our retreat meetings.

THE PRESENTER

  • Doug Motel

    (creator and facilitator)
Doug is an award-winning storyteller, writer, speaker, and coach. His events are a hybrid of performance, humor, and tools for positive change.
“I see the world as a place where people are playing a game of “hot potato” with fear: trying to get rid of the fear they have inherited by moving it onto someone else. My live and online work is my attempt to help us change that game to one of passing around joy and a sense of fun and play.” - Doug Motel

In his work, Doug tries to address the issues that confront people searching for deeper meaning in their everyday lives.

Author Marianne Williamson said: “Doug Motel makes “conscious comedy” he makes me laugh and he makes me think.” That says it best.
